cleaning & organizing
I’m starting to make some baby steps back into a costuming routine. I wish life would stand still a bit but the hours and days seem to speed by. I can’t believe it’s June already… *sigh* I’ve been doing a lot of sorting, organizing, filing and the like lately. Long overdue all of it. I’m very proud of myself as I got rid of a whole file box of papers and magazines. That will now become a fabric bin of course. :> I’ve totally redone my closet and the bins under my bed as well. Things fit much better now and my closet is a beautiful thing for once. I should take a pic to show you. :>

Mom and I also went through all the costuming bins and were merciless in cleaning them out. My perspective on costuming and authenticity as well as my knowledge and taste has changed so radically in the past few years, it was time to go through the stash with a fine-tooth comb. Most things we just tossed (a lot of the old "dress-up" things were in really bad shape) but I did pull out a few things to salvage for future projects. So that is what I’ve been doing the last few evenings, taking off old waistbands from petticoats, lace & feathers from hats, buttons from blouses and boning from old corsets. I love ripping things apart I really do! :>

I took B’s measurements yesterday so I’m all ready to start her pirate toiles, although exactly when that will happen I’m not sure. I’m still working on collecting my notes, pics and coding together so I can show you the plans for the pirate costume. *rubs hands together*

I did the same a number of weeks back, just threw out lots of stuff. Failed projects, things I was sick of or, just hated. Yes, more room for fabric :) I am looking forward to the Pirate Project. I made my friend Miles a Pirate Shirt, it came out great. I love that sort of Fantastic Pirate Costuming. It's so Swashbuckling :)

I'm looking forward to the pirate too... at least to seeing the finished product. It's going to be such fun once it's all put together!

I completely understand about how your taste in fabric changes as you have more experience and have done more research. Before I moved, I sent a bunch of fabric to goodwill. I just wasn't ever going to use them, and no one I know would've wanted to use them.

I'm excited to see this pirate costume take shape. Does B help you with projects you do for her? (i.e. can you get her to do all the parts you don't like (in my case, cutting out the pattern from the different fabrics)?)

Yeah, some things you just need to toss after a while.

Bridget is a big help... it's the only reason she ends up with such elaborate costumes each year! :>

I can't get her to do all the things I hate (in my case the first toiles, hems and last minute fitting, things she doesn't know how to do), but she is good about picking up household slack, pining and picking out seams for me so I can deal with the harder stuff. She is also in charge of all the embellishment, I only act as technical supervisor on that. :>
