linen petticoat choices

Since I’ve been very good about using fabric and supplies out of the stash for my 18th century outfit, I decided to treat myself with nice fabric for my petticoat. I needed to buy fabric anyway (having nothing in said stash) and I’m justifying the expense of linen with the thought that a petticoat is a basic staple I can use with multiple outfits. Right? Of course right! :>

So I got my new samples from Fabrics-Store.com yesterday and I’m having a very hard time deciding. It's between either the brown or the red. The red is practically a perfect match with the stripe, I’m just not sure I want to go I want to go matchy-matchy. The brown is lovely and the most practical color ever for me. It won't show dirt and will go with any color I'd ever want to wear. The red will just go with most things. :> *sigh* They each create such a totally different but equally pretty look.

The second, red toile de Jouy, fabric is probably what I will use for the lower sorts jacket. Unless I decide to be very bad and just get another shade of linen for it. *wink* This petticoat must work for both outfits regardless.

I know it's hard to judge online but what do you guys think? I have a few days to think about it, but I really should order soon. Ah, decisions, decisions!!

Hmmm... It's really hard to tell online, but here are my thoughts:

The red is nice, matches the red stripe very well. However, my one concern is that it'll be too much red (as if that is really ever a bad thing ;), and I know you're already a little concerned about wearing these bold stripes. So, if you're feeling adventerous go for the red.

The brown to me is just 'okay'. Doesn't jump out at me and doesn't say 'isn't this a cool combination with the stripe!'. But that would be the 'safe' choice if you're feeling like you want something a little less bold.

Either one is a nice choice, but again, a tough one. ;) I'd personally go with the red, but then again I do like red better than brown. ;) lol.

Thanks for your impute C. No denying this is a bold frock... regardless what color petticoat I wear. :> *shakes head* Why do I do these things to myself? :P

I like the red but I love the brown! I think the red would be too much but I'm not a big fan of lots of red. Brown is more neutral and would probably go with a lot more outfits.

Thanks! Yeah, I must admit I'm leaning toward the brown becasue it is more practical. I love brown too, it's one of my favorite colors!

Ditto. The red seems a little overwhelming, but I'm also one of those who doessn't wear a whole lot of red. I'm also wondering, though, if too much red might diminish the effect of the stripes. The brown might help the "pop" a bit more.

Ooh, you have a really good point there! The brown does allow the red to pop more, while toning it down at the same time. Odd really, but true. :>

I certainly don't want to be lost in a sea of red. :>

Brown I say, Brown!

Um. I seem to recall a person resembling your description choosing to make a titanic dress in a very bold color and not liking it. For all the reasons I discussed with you last week, I like the brown mucho mucho better. Besides, I love how it takes a cheery red and makes it a little more mysterious and interesting (and it makes that ribbon pop too.

Brown I say, Brown!

Re: Brown I say, Brown!

*hangs head in shame* I know, why I do these things to myself I don't know. What can I say, I’m a background type person that likes COLOR. Bad combo.

Thanks for your impute. I wanted to make sure you still felt the same as last week. I’m changed my mind several times since then. Ooh... a mysterious red... I like the sound of that. :>

Okay, okay! I'm convinced, brown here I come! :>
