a dying craft
Thanks for your feedback guys! I couldn't find any horrible reviews and even heard some glowing ones so I went ahead and ordered my boning/busk from Dragontown. Yay! Now I just have to figure out what fabric to cover the coutil with. I like pretty corsets you know. I just can't decide if I want to go girly pretty (baby pink) or crazy pretty (lime green) or dark/gothic pretty (black or midnight blue). *ponders*

It's sad though - through the LJ corsetmaker's group I found most of the places on their resource list or referred to in posts either don't carry corset supplies anymore or don't exist anymore. The rest have minimum orders or high shipping rates (Vogue Fabrics & Dragontown being the notable exceptions with flat rate shipping and no minimums). It's not a good sign at all - espeically for costumers like me who only dabble every so often in corsetmaking...

I am afraid it will not get better either. There are very few manufacturers of busks and real corset coutil in the world. Most of those companies require huge minimum purchases and yardage requirements to purchase stock from them. Most are International so you have HUGE import taxes (I ordered about $1,400. worth of coutil from Germany several years ago and had to pay around $400 in import taxes in order to get it). So the cost to stock those items and store them over time is very high and the demand to purchase then is very low. Because of the high prices, people buy busks and coutil in very small quantities. So people stop selling them, it is just not profitable.

This is one of the main reasons I stopped selling my supplies. I need them myself and may not be able to replace my stock once it is gone and most definitely not at the prices I paid 7 years ago.

One seller I buy from sometimes is Richard the Thread in California, USA. Prices are average but their quality and customer service are perfect.

Yeah I was getting that impression (few manufacturers + huge minimum purchases = difficult to stock) from trolling the LJ community. I'm not too surprised, but it is a bummer. I'll keep in mind Richard the Thread in future - their minimum order was not good for my limited budget this tie but they look like a good source for corset and millinery supplies if I can get some friends to go in with me next time. Thanks!

Richard the Thread has no minimum order amount.... do they? They are a retailer, in the past I have purchased a single busk or a 2 yard cut of coutil. Did something change??

According to the website they do, a $35 dollar one. I noticed many specific items have minimums too, like the cheap coutil is minimum 5 yards. I guess just more evidence of what we've been talking about. Sad.

Jenny, are you on the corsetmakers community? I am... not because I make them but because I like looking at pretty eye candy! :D Also because they have a lot of interesting how-to articles and I would like to start making them someday. But I digress. I have seen some people on that community ask if others would like to go in on a big purchase that way they have minimum orders for the larger retailers, but only have to order small quantities themselves. So maybe keep your eyes open there for future opportunities?

I'm not, I only started looking at the posts when I had issues with ordering from Vogue this time. I saw they have a separate community for bulk orders, which is cool. Problem is I don't make many steel boning corsets (yay for 18th century reed and cable ties!) and I tend to buy for specific projects so buying in bulk, guessing what sizes I need or waiting for a group order to be put together isn't a great option for me. Mreh.

Yeah, that's part of the reason I was so bummed about Greenberg anf Hammer. I know some other people had gotten poor customer service from them, but I never had anything but fast efficient service and they always had what I needed.

I'm really bummed about G&H too. I'd had backordered things but it always got to me in the end and I never had to worry about quality.

Isn't it sad what's happening? Sigh.

But about the corset, if you're planning on doing any light colored dresses, you might want to stay away from dark colors. Of course, I wear my red corset under my sheer dress and it doesn't show, but you do want to be careful!

It really is scary. Sometimes I forget what a specialized hobby we have. Things like this are abrupt and un-pleasant reminders.

That is my hesitation in a dark color. Although if I were ever to want to wear it on the outside (for a quickie steampunk or pirate or something) I'm more likely to use a dark colored corset. So which am I more likely to need in the unforeseen future? Decisions, decisions.

So they have closed?? I had gotten nothing but good service from them- a little slow, but I always received my stuff in the end. :(

Re: G&H

Yes indeed, G&H is no more. So sad! There is a news article about it here:

Just FYI.

I bought a zillion busks in a group order a couple years ago. If you need a busk I'll send you one. :)

Oh thanks! I've already ordered the one I need for this corset but I'll definitely keep your offer in mind for my next one if I may! :>
