PS - I seriously recommend stiffening the hem in some way. The method is described in "Moda a Firenze" (Eleonora di Toledo's funeral dress), as well as by Eva Andersson, here:

I experimented with it for my blue Florentine dress (the "peacock" dress), and was surprised by the immense difference in walking. So much easier, the skirt doesn't tangle up in between my knees, but stays put. I've since made an underskirt by the same method, and it made me understand why the Florentine ladies adapted the farthingale later than others. With a stiffened hem in both skirt and underskirt you kinda had a farthingale already... Or a very light version. I've written about it here:

Thanks again for the link and the help! You mentioned stiffening the hem in your dress diary so I was thinking about it. The one thing holding me back at this point is a lack of trim/fabric to cover up the stitching. So far I haven't found anything close enough to the bodice trim to use down there (in my budget). I'm still looking though! It may be something I have to add later as I find a trim to use...
