dress diary formats
This seems to be my day to ask questions! So I'm updating my website (kinda had too when I uploaded old files instead of backing-up the new ones - opps!) and playing around with an idea for the dress diaries that Jenni used in her recent update. (I'm really not original about these things!)

Right now I basically have a pic & title and then the dress diary. The gallery is on a separate page, each dress it's own gallery. Like this:

What I'm thinking about doing is having a pic, title and description/synopsis of the project. Then the gallery then the diary. All on one page. Like this:

Is the new way helpful or just more wordy in the front. Does having the gallery affect loading times? Please tell me what you think - I am open for opinions, suggestions!

Doesn't seem to affect loading times much. Love the new format though. :)

The gallery version is WAY too slow for me. But you know the issues we've been having. And it's so pretty either way. So I'm no help!

Oh, I like the second better! Sometimes I forget that the gallery link is even there. And I didn't have any load time issues.

Mmmmh I think I like the second option better. I didn't really notice the page loading any slower.

yes, i really like the new one, i used to keep getting muddled looking at your site, trying to remember where the pictures of the finished dress!!
it's not at all slow to load for me, but we have broadband :)

I like the second option. Actually, the Poe page had more of a lag time for me but my internet connection at work is really funny...

How about a hybrid approach? I quite like having the gallery on the same page as the dress diary, but maybe at the bottom of the page? As long as there's one fairly clear and/or interesting photo of the completed item at the top of the page, I kind of like tracing the steps through the dress diary before getting to the finished product.

It also means that, if you're worried about loading times for people with slower connections, the photos in the dress diary will load before the gallery photos, which I like because they actually relate to the text, whereas the finished product is pretty self-explanatory.

But maybe that's just me...

I agree with librarianofdoom. I like your idea of putting the gallery in with the page. But I would put it at the bottom of the page. At least that is just me I found myself skipping the pics to read the diary then coming back to the pics....

I third that. I like having the gallery on the page itself because I forget about the link/don't want to go to another page, but putting them first means all the diary photos have to wait. You could also insert a bookmark in the gallery area and keep the link up top. Then people who want just the gallery could be sent down the page.

I vote for the second. Because, c'mon - we all want to see the pictures first.

I like the 2nd option.

Well of course, I like the new way. ;) In all seriousness - I like having the eye candy first. It sucks one in and makes them then want to read all the details. And having the simple details up front is great for the person who just wants to remember, "what did Jenny-Rose use for fabric in her fabulous chemise dress?" Etc.

But of course, I am biased. And very flattered that you were inspired by my layout. :)

I really like the new set up! No load troubles for me.

Loads perfect for me, and I like the new version much better. After all, I'm even too lazy to do more mouse clicks than I absolutely have to. ;)

I like the new way - the synopsis is great and I like being able to see pictures before reading the diary, that way new visitors get an idea of the project
