my weekend pt 2: hats!

For a change of pace sadievale and I made a date to have a hat making day on Sunday. Mom (who is making a hat for the upcoming Mother-Daughter Tea) joined us as well. Much tea, laughter and teasing ensued. We even got some hat making done!

It took me a little while to decide what to do for my hat (I have so many ideas in my head!) but in the end I decided to just have fun with it. Like my outfit it's a little late for RCHS but I don't care. This whole venture has been just a pain, I'm ready to party. So I went for Big Hat (TM) for which I will need Big Hair (TM). Whoo hoo!

The front & back. May I introduce you to Fred? He is one of 4 little guys S rescued from a dusty old antique store this spring. We were both inspired by this fabulous outfit from the Duchess so when she found these darlings we couldn't resist. We each took two home. I have Fred & George while S kept Harry & Ron.

Ahh yes, Fred. To be honest I almost didn't use Fred, not wanting to offend (or be confronted, not into confrontation) by those who dislike the use of real fur. After a lot of thinking and soul searching I feel fine about my little Fred and my fur muff though. While I abhor the practices of modern fur makers, the use of vintage is okay with me. But then I also eat meat, wear leather and think the Bible is 100% true. For those who disagree, I respect your views but I can't share them. I hope we can just agree to disagree.

And a video so you can see the whole thing. The best thing about Fred is that he makes the hat incredibly well balanced. That hat isn't going anywhere, in fact I may not need a hat pin to keep it on. Note to self, heavier decorations are not necessarily a bad thing. I don't know about dancing in it though and if it rains I'm screwed ‘cause this Hat Made of Fabulous is not going anywhere near water!

... the hat so far. Once I figured out what I was going to do, I got as far as stitching on the band of ribbon around the brim. I used small pleats at the bottom but keep the top less structured. I liked it better a bit messy looking. I adore this ribbon and have been hoarding it for just the right project. I’m so happy to be using it finally!

You know I have another one of those buckles somewhere. I'm thinking I need sash with buckle at my waist now. :>

Oh my goodness! That is one absolutely fabulous hat!

And I totally understand your desire to avoid confrontation. While I may be on the other side of the spectrum from you, I think that it is best to agree to disagree like you said. I hate it when people try to force their view on me, so why should I play the hypocrite and do the same to them?
Anyway, love the hat! The ribbon is just perfect.

Thanks - I think it will be fun to wear! Yes I adore the ribbon, I wish I had more! I appreciate your words too and your graciousness too. :P Differences make life more interesting anyway. :>

Wow! Amazing hat!
I'm with you on the fur thing. I would never buy 'new' fur. But vintage is something entirely different. If more of us agreed to disagree, the world would be a happier, more peaceful place.

Oooooh!! Hoorah and huzzah for 18th century hats!! :-D

It's lovely. And I love the real-fur idea! I'm sure that poor little fella is quite happy to be bedecking a lady's chapeau in his "new life". ;-)

BTW -- Jenny, I hope you'll forgive my bugging you, but I could swear that you made a dress of Waterhouse's Ophelia...only I can't find it anywhere on your website!! Am I going crazy, or am I just mistaken??
jennylafleur From: jennylafleur Date: April 16th, 2008 01:41 pm (UTC) (link)
Thanks! Can you tell I'm having way too much fun with this one? :>

Nope, I haven't made a Waterhouse's Ophelia. I did reference Michaela's in my Rohan dress diary as one of my main inspirations, perhaps you are thinking of that. I can't seem to find her gown on her site, she may have taken it down. You can ask though...

Haha, yes!!

Okay, thank you. I thought it might have been you but since it wasn't thank you for your reply. :-) You really are very kind!

I love it! You've given me an evil idea for a future Edwardian hat!!

Thanks - oh good passing on evil ideas is my real purpose in costuming! :>
