attaching the bodice linings

I sewed the front and back bodices to their respective linings this evening. I apparently made a mistake on the shoulder straps though, as they don’t match (the front is wider than the back). So before I can join the shoulders, I’ll have to redo the front, turning it inside-out again and trimming a little. No big. I also got the sleeves pinned so they are ready to be sewn.

I had to try the corded bodice on tonight to double check something on the bodice, so I took some pics. Mom was available to lace me up nice and tight but wasn’t available to take pics so I took them in the bathroom mirror again. :>

I have some of that blue cotton left over from the sleeves so I think I use it for binding of the CB. I’ve always like the combination of blue and yellow. :>

The bodice came out quite nice. For some reasion I always have a problem attaching ribbon to a bodice. Did you hand sew it on? If your going to give a "How I did this" in the dress diary just pop me a note when its uploaded on your site. I'd appreciate that :)

Man! I had a long, beautifully worded reply for you and my computer crashed. How annoying!

I wasn’t planning anything specific for how to attach ribbons on my site. I'm afraid I didn't take the pics for it. What specifically have you had problems with, the piecing, the application...?

The piecing is a bit tricky, hard to explain without pics. If you would like, I will take some pics with scraps to show how I did it. I don’t mind if it would be helpful.

The applying was fun, for me anyway. I did it all by hand, I prefer the control hand stitches give when applying trim. It's easier to hide the stitches too. I used a simple running stitch, one both sides of each ribbon. I used quite small stitches on the front (approx. .5mm) and larger ones in the back (approx 1mm, where they didn't show). I’ll take some close-ups of those for you later. I'm pretty sure I will be applying some ribbon to the bottom of my skirt, I can take pics of that process if you want. I need to measure the skirt's circumference and make sure I have enough ribbon. I think I do. :>

I have the piecing pretty much down, Im good visually that way. The problem occures in attaching the ribbon to the fabric. In thinking about it, I attach the ribbon using the machine and the result is a very tight stitch which pulls the fabric not giveing me a smooth effect. I cant begin to tell you how many times I threw out expensive ribbon, etc because it had to be riped off the fabric. And, how many times the bodice to my red renaissance dress had to be remade because of my mess up in applying ribbon. So, I guess I should take out my thin fine needle and fine thread and attach the ribbon by hand?

If it's not too much trouble, yes I like to see some close ups and to be able to follow you along with photos if you attach ribbon to the bottom of your skirt.

No trouble at all. I'll probally get to the skirt trim next week. Oh wait that's after the hem is done huh? Maybe the week after then. :> I'll pop you an e-mail when it's up...

Wow! I love it!! Your gown is going to be so pretty! :)

I apparently made a mistake on the shoulder straps though, as they don’t match (the front is wider than the back).

I'm constantly doing that. :p I always keep my shears handy to trim off excess whenever I sew shoulder seams. Even though I always measure, and re-measure, the shoulders never, ever come out the same width! :\

I'm glad I'm not the only one! :>

I think this little discrepancy happened when I lowered the back neckline a bit. I keep forgetting the shoulder straps are attached to the neckline. Duh!
