muff musings
Wow, finding info on 18th century muffs is harder than I would have thought. So far the only silk ones I've found are from Williamsburg and Costume in Detail (check out Nehelenia's copy of that muff).

Does anyone know of other muffs online or in print? I'm looking for pictures more than print on them. Luckly they look pretty simple to constuct - I shouldn't need a pattern. I'm not sure how I want to pad it, cotton batting lined with fiberfill (warmth plus bulk) perhaps. I'd love to work some embordery on my muff as well, although it's a bit crazy to attempt it this week.

Well no one has accused me of being sane lately! :>

Oh I just found a muff in Revolution in Fashion (pg 30). Very colorful with chenille embordery - pretty. No date on the muff but it's shown with a c1770 dress. Fun, fun!

It's driving me crazy...I KNOW there's a picture of a muff somewhere online: the muff is grey (possibly fur), embroidered with red (possibly chenille) flowers. I have such a clear mental image of it, but I can't remember where from! I thought it was at Vintage Textile, but I can't find it. Grrrrrr. :) It's probably at home in my image folder somewhere.

Good luck with tracking down more pictures...there are surprisingly few online, and all I saw was portraits rather than extants. Weird.

I don't know if it would help you, but there is a 1784 fashion plate with an embroidered muff in it at It is on page 55 of the 18th century category. They also have a mid-18th century muff cover that is embroidered.

Yay! An embroidered muff is one of my dream projects! I figure I'll ask my Mom to watercolor some little portraits for it for my next birthday, since I don't have that kind of talent. ;)

I had no idea Nehelenia had done one, so I'm really glad you pointed that one out!

I can't wait to see your muff! Yay! :)
