bogged down in ruffles

I got some work done on the Diva yesterday, though not as much as I'd like. Gah this trim is a time sucker!!

I sewed in the sleeves. They still aren't great but I can live with them now. most of my day was taken up with the foofy red ruffle that runs along the hem. I gathered and pinned and sewed that on the machine. Doesn't take long to say but it took f-o-r-e-ve-r to do!

Next up is the green zig-zag trim. It took me a little while to figure out how to apply that. In a straight line was boring while deep swags looked odd with the ruffle. In the end I'm swaging it just a bit. From faraway you can't really tell it's swaged, it just looks more interesting.

Of course I had a couple of threads break so I had to re-sew some of the basting stitches. Also I found I was going to be short so I had to tear, fray and stitch a couple more strips of fabric (making a total of 8 now I think). What a pain! I could have saved myself so much hassle if I'd just put the trim on the front of the skirt but really what is the fun in that?

The idea of glueing the red sequins on the skirt (rather than sewing them by hand) is starting to look better and better though I have to say! :P

We're peas in a pod...I'm bogged down with zigzag trim for my gala dress too! But it looks like you're doing WAY more than I am!

Concerning gluing on those sequins, I was thinking of the advice you gave Sarah recently, "better finished than perfect". Don't know if that helps you to make a decision or not :)

Yes, I keep hearing my own voice saying that. I've pretty much decided to hand sew the other front panel (so the fronts match) and just glue the rest. Life is too short to be anal retintive about one's gala dress. :P

Oh I cannot wait to see the whole thing, the fabric is gorgeous!

(don't do it! The glue could stay on/stain the fabric forever while the sequin will fall off)

Have you considered heat set crystals or pearls instead? That is pretty quick to do.

or you can always add the sequins later.

Crystals and pearls won't work with my design (crystals not being anywhere close to period). I'm not too concerned about the sequins falling off and leaving a spot, I'd just re-glue another one on that spot.

Good point about the glue making the color run though. I'll have to test it (although with this shade of red, everything makes the color run!) - thanks for the reminder!

Wow, as much as a pain this dress has been, it is looking absolutely fabulous now - just think how amazing it'll be when it's finished! Good luck :D

Believe me - that thought is the only thing keeping me going at this point!

Thanks! :>

It's coming along great!

And ruffles always take longer than you think. They're so annoying :)

Thanks!

They really are annoying, aren't they? Why do we torture ourselves like this? Oh yeah, that pretty princess thing. :P
