Well I'm bummed. I got all the channels sewn in my Effigy Stays and ran out of reed about 1/3 of the way into boning it.

I looked up both the Silly Sisters (where my original reed came from) & Reconstructing History and dude the shipping is really high! $8 for the reed, $7 for the shipping. *chokes* I could probably pick up the Silly Sister reed in person (since they are in Fredericksburg) but I suspect that will be a pain and frankly the RH reed is nicer. Also SS has 33.3 yds for $8.50, while RH has 83yds for $8, making RH the better deal. I even thought of having Mom order her stays boning from RH so we could split the shipping but RH has is set up so that one item (any item!) is $7, two items is $12. Three items is $15. So some reed and some steel boning and I'm now paying more in shipping than for my purchases. That just doesn't go down well with me.

I know shipping is expensive and going flat rate priority is easiest for a small business but it just rubs me the wrong way to pay the same amount for shipping as for my item. To make me feel even worse, if I'd known about these shipping prices I could have bought the reed shipping free at either Fort Fred or CosCon!

So now I'm wondering what to do. I can:
1. Break down and pay double thanks to shipping costs for the RH reed.
2. Try to arrange picking up the more expensive reed from Silly Sisters.
3. Ditch the reed and bone with steel. (I'd have to order that too.)
4. Resew all the channels to use cable ties.
5. Take matches to the whole project and drink a very dry martini while watching it burn.

Honestly right now #5 sounds the most appealing but I know I'm just a little emotional at the moment so I'm not going to make a decision tonight. *shakes fist at sky* I knew this project was going along too well.

What type of reed are you using? I have some leftover 1/4" oval-oval that I could send you.
Also, I've had luck with basket-making or wicker-chair-repairing stores; are there any in your area?

I am using 1/4" flat-oval. Thanks but I just found some on Etsy for a good price. I think I'm good to go now!

Yes, what kind of reed are you using? I bought some 7 mm half-oval from a seller on Etsy a while ago for less than that, and I do believe she has more. It was like $5 for two rolls and then a couple dollars for shipping. I used far less than one roll for my Effigy bodies, too. The user was BlackenedVoodoo, and she doesn't have any listed in her shop currently, but if you messaged her, she'd probably be able to make a listing for you.

Thanks so much for your help! Your post lead me to searching Bbay and Etsy and I found a good deal on the former. I don't know why I didn't think to look there before! :>

Oh no, that sucks! I vote for a partial #5. Take that dry martini and relax. *hugs*

Thanks! I did better than that, I had some chocolate and then went promply went to bed. I found a good price on Etsy this morning though... sometimes you just have to walk away!

I've got some left over that I got from RH at Costume Con. If you don't mind making the journey up my way again you could pick some up...the catch is that I'm not back in town until a week from today.

Thanks so much for the offer! I just foud some on Etsy for a much better price. If it turns out to be the wrong thing though I'll be knocking on your door next week, blackberries in hand and eyelashes batting! :>

Do half of number 5. It'll make you feel better. Then get some reed, and finish boning with it. Ack! So annoying, and when you're just getting into it too!

Good advice! :> I hate stopping in mid-stream costuming. My system just doesn't handle it well!! Now I know to just stock up on the reed next time.

I've done two of them with plain old ordinary broomstraw. A 5 dollar "corn" broom usually has enough straw for 2 corsets. Unless you are really tall or like the front to come down very low an ordinary broom will have long enough straw. If you are over 5 foot eight or very long waisted it might not work.

I'm still not sure why people use reed, isn't that like 25 times heavier than the bents we have examples of?

Well I am over 5' 8" so maybe not a good option for me... still a good tip - thanks!

I haven't seen extant bents in person to compare but the reed that I'm using is super lightweight. It's actually rattan reed or canning, what baskets and wicker chair seats are made of. Frankly it's so lightweight that I'm a little skeptical that is will hold up to the abuse I put my stays through. However I know lots of people who swear by it and I'm in an experimenting mood so... :>

It's so annoying to run out of a necessary item in the middle of an energic making... I hope you'll get more supplies soon!

So annoying!! I hate having to stop when I'm in the mood to sew, it's a horrible feeling. Thanks!

Aw... I'm so sorry that you're in this spot! :p I was just telling my mom yesterday how annoyed I am that postage costs have gone through the roof on small, lightweight things like this. I definitely think a dry martini is a good idea (although I'd wait to burn the project just yet!). ;)

Anyway, I hope you can figure something out... :)

I know, postage is such a pain. It's only going to get worse too...

I think I figured it out - Etsy to the rescuse again! I love Etsy!

I'm really starting to get disenfranchised with the whole "mailing" thing. :p I mean, if it weren't for the fact that I love receiving and sending honest to goodness mail so much, I'm not sure I'd use the PO that much any more! lol. It's just gotten far too ridiculous for my pocket book!
